Most Forecasters Predict Six Atlantic Hurricanes in 2009 Season

Most major weather agencies predict a somewhat less active hurricane season in the Atlantic this year with six hurricanes including two or three majors – Category 3 or higher with winds exceeding 110 miles per hour. The season runs from June 1 to November 1 officially. Private forecasting firm Planalytics was on the low side, calling for only one or two majors. Colorado State University’s Philip Klotzbach and William Gray predicted two majors. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast from one to three Category 3’s or higher. Last year was one of the most active seasons on record with 16 tropical storms and eight hurricanes.
