U.S. RE - Europe In Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden, the ancient German spa where the elite of Europe once gathered to take the waters, was the scene late last month of the annual conclave of brokers and reinsurers. Mark Lucas, Managing Director of U.S. RE - Europe, was there to meet with clients and discuss their reinsurance needs for the coming season.

The conference began many years ago as an informal gathering of marine reinsurers and brokers. Over the past 20 years it has developed into a premier deal-making session for all sectors of reinsurance.

Mr. Lucas said there are no general sessions, in fact no set program of any kind. "There are no invitations to the conference, no registration, but hundreds of individual meetings are held in which reinsurers and brokers do serious business."

Over a period of three days, Mr. Lucas held more than 40 individual meetings. "Most of the brokers present were looking to the upcoming renewal season," according to Mr. Lucas, "but due to the specialized nature of many U.S. RE products we're not tied to the same dead-lines." He said the meeting offered an opportunity "to demonstrate that we're actively in the market following our move from Copenhagen to U.S. RE's new European headquarters in Basel, Switzerland."
